The Road Not Taken - 1211 Words
The Road Not Taken By: Robert Frost Imagine that your making a decision and you are stuck to choose between two things that could change and impact your life greatly. What would you do? What pathway would you take? Robert Frost wrote ââ¬ËThe Road Not Takenââ¬â¢ in 1916 at the age of 42 in New England, Massachusetts. ââ¬ËThe Road Not Takenââ¬â¢ is one of his most popular works due to the ideology of choices that people would have to face in their life. In the early 20th century, Robert Frost based the majority of his poems from rural life in New England, where he grew up. Robert Frost was highly regarded for his deep, realistic understanding of rural life and using elaborate social and philosophical themes in his works. This poem explores aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For the second stanza, the traveller is describing that both pathways are equally the same through the used of extended metaphors, personification and metaphors. On third stanza, the poet is providing additional information on the season by ââ¬Å"And both that morning equally lay, in leaves no step had trodden blackâ⬠. This imagery of the season autumn symbolises the perfect layers of yellow leaves on the path as for a long period of time no one has walked on it yet. On third line, onomatopoeia was used which is ââ¬Å"ohâ⬠that illustrates an emphatic tone for the decision that he made. The traveller is now regretting the decision that he made. On the last two lines, an extended metaphor was used, ââ¬Å"Yet knowing how way leads on to wayâ⬠, ââ¬Å"I doubted if I should ever come backâ⬠. These last two lines of the third stanza, heightens the attention of readers that he hopes that he could try the other path as the traveller knows ââ¬Ëhow one road can lead to anotherââ¬â¢. Also, the traveller is having doubts as it is impossible to retrace steps as other choices or decisions can lead to other options in life. The third stanza raises the awareness to readers as he decided to stick with the decision that he made but still with a bit of regrets. For example when a teacher is dictating letters of the alphabet in an elementary class and then a bumble bee flies in, the children will be distracted but how the teacher reacts to this distraction is a test of how well they can solve problems. This example is one of the reasons why I believe that at times, the demands placed on the teacher are conflicting with what is good is for them. As a teacher I will strive to ensure that I promote a democratic environment in my classes. I will do this by ensuring that I involve the students in making decisions that affect them and in which I believe that their participation in decision making will not compromise the quality of education they get. This is necessary as it would help in making the students feel responsible and for their education and hence calling for their increased participation. For example in high school our math teacher used to ask us to set the date when we wanted to take a continuous assessment test. This was different from other teachers who set the dates for us. What happened is that we all put a lot of emphasis in studying for math as we did not want to fail for an exam we had decided when it would be given to us. This is the kind of democracy that I intend to promote in my classroom as it will help improve student performance by motivating them to take charge of their lives at an early age. This is important as most students end up finishing college while they are still looking up to their tutors to make decisions for them. So when there are no tutors around, the students end up making wrong decisions as they were not well prepared for decision making in school. What a teacher portrays is useful in determining the quality of education the student gets. I intend to portray a good image and to ensure that my students see me as a symbol of critical thinking and problem solving. I also intend to promote democracy in my classroom to ensure that my students are well motivated and also learn how to take charge of their lives.

Glial Derived Neurotrophic Factor - Essay Example Glial Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF) is a naturally occurring protein found in the brain and there is evidence that GDNF is necessary for normal neuromuscular development and survival. In 1994 Amgen Inc. acquired the patent for synthetic GDNF. After a series of animal trials and pre-clinical trials, Phase-I trials began in 2001-2002 in the UK and at the University of Kentucky. These trials showed significant improvement for the participants and researchers at Bristol UK remarked, "Within a couple of months, patients were noticing dramatic improvements in their ability to move". Similar results were reported from the Kentucky trials, which noted, "...there appeared to be bilateral improvements, including improved postural stability [...] evidence of improved affect and fine motor control and speed". GDNF appeared to be a promising breakthrough. Based on the previous favorable results, Amgen initiated Phase-II trials involving 34 patients in 2003. However, by 2004 GDNF had been shown to cause brain lesions in primate tests and Amgen immediately halted the testing. It was noted by researchers that the primates had been given a dose 10 times that of the human participants and there was overwhelming evidence that the lesions were caused by the sudden withdrawal of GDNF.
